DESCRIPTION

Physical health includes those conditions relating to the body, as distinguished from the mind, which describe a person's ability to function optimally without evidence of disease or abnormality. It is a state of dynamic balance in which an individual's or group's physical capacity to cope with all the circumstances of living is at an optimum level (Stedman's Medical Dictionary, 1995).

It also measures selected local indicators for meeting the Healthy People 2000 objectives. This examination includes a review of:

  • General mortality, including life expectancy and years of potential life lost;
  • Maternal and infant health;
  • Chronic diseases;
  • Communicable diseases;
  • Environmental health; and
